PhD in Biomedical Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

The curriculum consists on a first part of optional courses with a teaching load of 60 ECTS, called the course of Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering and a second part intended for the preparation of a thesis, under Article 31. Of the Decree-Law No. 74/2006.
The Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering includes a scholar component (the Doctoral Course) and the elaboration of a PhD Dissertation, in a total of 180 ECTS. The study cycle has a minimum duration of 3 years. The Doctoral Course (60 ECTS) is intended to provide the student with advanced knowledge in the area o f Biomedical Engineering and to prepare him for the research work to be developed in the Dissertation component (120 ECTS), where it will be privileged the autonomous research leading to the presentation and discussion of an original, high quality work. The Doctoral Course includes a Thesis Project curricular unit, where the student will have write a report that must contain, among other elements, a detailed state of the art and published work related to his research theme, the problem(s) to be addressed and solved, the possible techniques and methodologies to be used for solving that (those) problem(s), an estimate of the work results and a detailed planning for his activities. This report will be presented for defence in a public exam with a jury. In addition to the Thesis Project, the Doctoral Course has optional curricular units (UC´s) for specialized or complementary training in the scientific area of Biomedical engineering. A high number of UC’s is available, representing the different areas of Biomedical Engineering where research of excellence is done at the University of Coimbra. This makes possible to adequate the Doctoral Course to the intended PhD Thesis. The students may also configure their Doctoral Course by adding to the UC’s included in the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering, UC’s from other PhD programs (which can be credited here), or trainings (also creditable) at technological companies with research and development nucleus. This flexibility in the initial phase of the study cycle, always associated to a high level of demand, derives from the multidisciplinary and interface characteristics of Biomedical Engineering and will be an important asset for the Program students. After finishing Doctoral Course, whose duration is two semesters, and getting his Thesis Project approved,
the student will begin the research work leading to his PhD Thesis, which will be presented for defence in a public exam with a jury.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

This course of study provides its students: -Training and multidisciplinary advanced studies in Biomedical Engineering - Competence to perform leadership and original research in the field of Biomedical Engineering, both in the academic environment, whether in business environment. - Ability to conduct research that contributes to increasing knowledge and enhancing their scientific and technological knowledge into products or processes innovative and creative able to transform the organization in which they insert. - To train professionals able to promote innovation and change, aware of the economic, social and environmental that will be called upon to solve problems and new paradigms of action where communication skills and networking, and the ethical requirement of sustainability requirements are fundamental.
