Objetivos do Curso

The Master’s degree in Mining and Geological Engineering, University of Coimbra aims to provide professionals with an integrated perspective of System of Earth and its evolution; with the ability to design, execute or collaborate in projects of prospection, evaluation, exploration and improvement of geological resources; to collaborate on work in the area of civil engineering; to collaborate on geoenvironmental requalification projects, to cooperate effectively with multidisciplinary teams; with comprehensive knowledge that allows them to redirect their training and work without significant loss of acquired skills; with respect for the environment and an ethical attitude that respects the principles of hygiene and safety at work.
Curricular structure:
The duration of the course is two years. Students are to attend five curricular units per semester in the 1st year (2 compulsory and three optional). In the second year students are to attend three curricular units in the first semester (1 compulsory and two optional) and an annual Dissertation or Internship with a public discussion

Condições de Acesso e Ingresso

Admission to the Master’s degree in Mining and Geological Engineering is granted to:
a)Holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent in: (i) Civil Engineering with Minor in Geological Engineering, (ii) Geological Engineering, (iii) Mining Engineering,(iv) Mining and Geological Engineering, (v )Geological and Mining Engineering, (vi) Mines and Geo-Environmental Engineering;
b) Holders of a domestic or foreign academic degree that are recognized by the Scientific Committee of the Department of Earth Sciences, to meet the requirements of access to the Master’s Mining and Geological Engineering. The Committee will recommend the attending additional courses so that candidates meet the minimum requirements.

The holder of the Master’s in Mining and Geological Engineering from the University of Coimbra will be able to working the following companies and organizations: Public construction sites companies (construction of roads, airports, tunnels, hydroelectric plants, underground tunnels, water withdrawal, dredging, landfill sites, etc.); construction companies in general, companies in the extractive industry (quarrying, mining, mineral processing workshops, transformation of ornamental stones, environmental recovery, planning and management); Companies specialized in geotechnical design, environmental requalification studies and project enterprises (engineering design, environmental studies, quality control, monitoring and supervision of construction sites), prospecting and drilling companies, civil protection services, regional coordination committees; inter-municipal associations and local authorities, other public administration bodies(geological survey, the regional director at of the Ministry of Economy, civil engineering national laboratory, institutes under the Ministry of Public Works); research organizations.

Regras de Avaliação

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Objetivos da Aprendizagem e Competências a Desenvolver

The Master's course in Mining and Geological Engineering is mostly targeted towards interests in construction works, exploitation of geological resources and environmental consulting, with a perspective based on ethical and
respect for the environment and the principles of hygiene and safety at work.
The skills acquired should enable graduates to perform geological prospecting, location, evaluation, exploration and beneficiation of geological resources, fundamental in the mining industry. The multidisciplinary study plan
enables collaboration in works of civil engineering, including tunnels, dams, bridges, canals, coastal works, roads, airports and large buildings. As well as collaboration in geoenvironmental oriented projects related to the use of the
soil and subsoil. At the same time, the curriculum contains a strong presence of legislation and regulations, allowing students to adapt to an ethical and respectful posture towards the environment and the principles of hygiene and safety.

In order to receive the degree, the student must achieve a number of 14 curricular units (8 compulsories and 6 optional) and an annual Dissertation with a public presentation.
