Recommended Prerequisites

Introduction to Reaction Engineering; Chemical Reactors; Analytical Chemistry; Industrial Effluents and Environment.

Teaching Methods

The TP classes will be taught together for all students, while in the PL classes, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 4 members. The theoretical content will be explained using slides and diagrams on the board. Whenever possible, images and short videos will be used, showcasing activities carried out in the research laboratories of DEQ/FCTUC or demonstrating, for example, the operation of pilot- or industrial-scale equipment used for the implementation of the technologies taught

Learning Outcomes

Understand the diversity of pollutants that can be found in water and effluents resulting from human activities, as well as the impact of climate change on the quality of water resources; Learn techniques for characterizing water and liquid effluents; Understand the complexity of the environmental and human health impacts resulting from improper wastewater management; Recognize the need to use advanced treatment technologies to comply with current (and future) legislation; Master wastewater treatment technologies through advanced oxidation processes as an alternative or complement to traditional systems; Acknowledge that the complexity of wastewater composition (especially from industrial sources) requires a combination of technologies for proper management; Recognize the need for water disinfection for human consumption and/or reuse.
