Teaching Methods

Presentation of theoretical concepts, methodologies to approach topics in this area, and some practical examples.
Presentation of case studies and discussion of more complex problems with students organised into groups.

Learning Outcomes

This course is intended to give students the knowledge necessary to change the surfaces of various materials in order to increase their activity, control their energy and hydrophobicity. The students will also have an overview of the applications of the hitherto modified materials in important areas such as electronics and medicine.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

Surface modification by chemical, physical and biological processes. Plasma-induced modification. Modification of surfaces by graft copolymerisation, immobilisation of biological compounds and curing. Surface modification by silanisation and the sol-gel process.
Nanotechnology in surface modification.
The importance of the modified materials in important areas such as chromatographic analysis, biotechnology, medicine, electronics, computer science and aeronautics. Surface characterisation by XPS, SEM, determination of surface energy and FTIR.
Adhesion phenomena.
