Teaching Methods
The teaching methodologies of this curricular unit are conducive to participation. This methodological option aligns with the course's main objective: to stimulate and develop critical thinking.
Thus, in class, there will be:
a) a presentation of content followed by discussion, both in class and on asynchronous online platforms;
b) a promotion of research work, with the respective presentation and discussion.
Learning Outcomes
This seminar promotes reflection on the representational power of the media narrative and theoretical and empirical approaches to the concept of literacy. It seeks a critical positioning beyond merely functional knowledge of technologies and the media and explores media culture as a process through which people circulate and contest meanings about themselves, their social experiences, and their social relations.
At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Recognise the discursive properties of media narratives;
- Problematise journalism in the light of the field of Narrative Media Studies;
- Understand the importance of information and technology in democratic development;
- Know and critically analyse public policies on information and media literacy;
- Establish the framework for debates on media and representation in the context of key developments in media studies and cultural studies.
