Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical sessions, with theoretical presentations by teachers and the preparation of small tasks by students, such as critical review of texts, oral presentations and preparation of written papers, among others.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should:

a) to know the importance of climatic conditions in tourism development;

b) to know the main mechanisms and trends of climate change;

c) to understand the impacts of climate change on tourist activities, particularly in the mediterranean world;

d) to understand the impacts of climate change on tourist activities in Portugal;

e) to recognize the importance of tourism in the preparation and implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change.

Syllabus

1 - The concepts: tourism, leisure, sport, climate and climate change; the importance of the climate and the environment in tourism;

2 - Climate as an activity that induces climate change.

3 - Mechanisms and trends of climate change. Impacts in the Mediterranean regions and in Portugal.

4 - The importance of climate change in some climatic elements (temperature, precipitation and sunshine); changes in thermal comfort and in the distribution and behavior of some diseases.

5 - Climate change, natural disasters, safety and tourism.

6 - Climate Change and Tourism: mitigation and adaptation measures.
