Teaching Methods

This unit adopts a theoretical and practical methodology based on reading, the critical analysis of theoretical texts, plays, pictures, and videos of the staging of plays. Documental supports will be used to reflect the multiple aspects of the theatre activity, including the new recording possibilities offered by photography, video, and the growing digitalization in artistic creation and research.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the main authors and thematic guidelines of Portuguese theatre (Modern and Contemporary Age); 

2. Learn about the new creation dynamics with regard to forms, language, and the processes of theatrical creation;

3. Describe the structural transformations and production methods that characterize the field of Portuguese theatre;

4. Develop the ability to carry out autonomous research on texts and theatre practices in Portugal.

Syllabus

The syllabus of this unit offers an overview of Portuguese theatre from the 18th century to the present times, focusing on the following guidelines: (1) Popular and erudite genres from the 18th century to Romanticism; (2) From the establishment of bourgeois drama to the historical drama of the 19th century; (3) Naturalism and naturalist theatre; (4) From symbolism to modernism; (5) The emergence of scene dialogue and experimental dynamics up to 1974; (6) From the rise of “independent theatre” to contemporary theatre: transformations in the creation, production, and reception processes.
