Teaching Methods

Traditional lecture and active learning (group working activities, case study discussions and simulations). Meetings with guest speakers to provide students with a solid education in the context of an enriching university experience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have to know the main methodologies used for designing new effective chemical entities. They will be able to critically discuss the structure-activity relationships of some classes of drugs. In particular, they should be able to recognize the essential pharmacophoric groups and to discuss the possible modifications useful to optimize their properties. Students should be able to propose the most adequate methods for structural modifications aiming at the optimization of the biological a ctivity.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

The course will consider the key aspects of drug design providing an overview of the drug discovery process. It will focus on therapeutic target selection, on the mode of intervention with an emphasis on small molecule hit identification and validation and on approaches used in lead optimization. It will give insight into the main structural features of examples drugs representative of different classes.
