Teaching Methods

The classes will take place in the classroom. Expositive component, as well as analysis and discussion of texts and materials previously provided, some of which will be presented by the students.

Learning Outcomes

The seminar aims to consolidate, extend and deepen students’ knowledge about British culture; to familiarize students with theoretical concepts relevant to the study of culture; to develop a critical awareness about the topics under discussion; to provide students with advanced and independent research skills.

Syllabus

‘London: from Great Metropolis to Global City’ The seminar concentrates on the evolution of London, from19th century great metropolis to contemporary global city. The approach will be multidisciplinary, ranging from the historical to the sociological, from urban planning models to symbolic meanings, from economic paradigms to cultural forms, from racial to identitary issues. The course will thus promote a multifaceted research on the centrality of London in the cultural imaginary of the country and on the various ways in which the capital has been understood and represented in British culture.
