Recommended Prerequisites

Scientific knowledge in the area and of research methodologies, as well as competences of oral communication and academic writing, defined as learning outcomes of the 1st academic year.     

Teaching Methods

To achieve the main objective of this curricular unit, several methodologies are used, of which we highlight the tutorial monitoring and presentation by students of work in progress. A culture of mutual learning between peers and between teachers and students will also be fostered through regular meetings to discuss ongoing research work, as well as group sharing of difficulties and experiences associated with the development of scientific work.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit aims to provide training and proper supervision for the development and execution of the research project. Monitoring is carried out according to each research project, and aims to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and competences that enable the realization of the dissertation, ethically correct and within the expected time.

Specific competences, at the end of this uc student is able to:

- support theoretically the research project;

- use appropriately research designs and techniques;

- apply ethical procedures and principles associated with scientific research.

Transversal competences:

- communicate accurately and clearly with the scientific community and society in general;

- research and critically analyze scientific research and production

- work as a team member.

Given the nature of this curricular unit, its contents are intrinsically associated with the interests and research options of each student.

- General standards and procedures for the organization of the dissertation.

- Steps for the preparation of the research project and its rationale according to the research objectives.

- Ethical issues in the design, planning and development of a scientific research.

- Possible levels of decision-making in an investigation involving the community dimension.

- Potential risks in an investigation and contingency measures according to ethical criteria and specificities of the field work.

- Requirements for the organization of the dissertation, taking into account the questions of the fidelity of a scientific study.

- Characteristics of scientific writing and communication in science.

- The relevance of social responsibility of science.

- The notion of citizen science and the role of scientific research in the empowerment of people and communities.
