Learning Outcomes

Inclusive Education and Developmental Disorders, optional curricular unit of of the degree on Educational Sciences , provides continuity to the students’ education in the domain of special needs, focusing on types not addressed previously. The goals of this unit are:

- To define the area, delimiting it and linking it to other curricular units;

- To know the characteristics of particular types of special educational needs, namely Intellectual Disabilities, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, and Cerebral Palsy;

- To recognize the diversity of each of the mentioned types;

- To identify and to implement educational interventions in different contexts and through the life span.

Syllabus

- Intellectual Disabilities: Definition, identification and classification. Etiologies. Characterization of specific syndromes (e.g., Down Syndrome). Family-centered early intervention. Elaboration of individualized educational programs. Teaching methods and strategies. The transition from school to post school life.

- Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Delimitation and characterization. Explanatory models. Intervention in family and school context.

- Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Definition and characterization of the autism spectrum. Etiologies. Psychoeducational assessment. Models of intervention and educational strategies.

- Cerebral Palsy: Definition, classifications, and etiologies. Characterization. Intervention and rehabilitation strategies.
