Teaching Methods

Lecture method associated with the use of pedagogical practices that promote independent work of students and their active participation in the learning process, such as presentation and discussion of texts and conducting work group.

Learning Outcomes

The curricular unit Analysis of Educational Policies aims at contributing to the understanding of the evolution of educational policies as a reflection of contemporary changes associated with a redefinition of the role of the state in a context of globalization.

At the end of this curricular unit students should be able to:

- Know concepts, theoretical perspectives and research studies in the field of Educational Policies.

- Understand the evolution of educational policies and their relation to social change and political forms of the State.

- Discuss the growing influence of transnational regulation and the recontextualization of standardized global educational policies.

- Know ongoing reforms and educational policies in Portugal.

- Critically and reflexively analyze educational policies.

Syllabus

1- Public policies and educational policies. Models of public policy analysis. The sequential model. The analysis of public policies from the perspective of public action. The concepts of regulation and governance

2 - New forms of regulation of education and the reconfiguration of the role of the State. The crisis of the welfare state.

3- Education and neoliberalism. The market logic and the principles of privatization, free choice and competitiveness.

4- Globalization, Europeanization and transnational regulation. The role of international organizations in the definition of national educational policies.

5- Educational policies and reduction of inequalities in education in Portugal.
