Recommended Prerequisites

The student should hold a graduate degree in the generic field of literary studies, with an emphasis on Portuguese literature. The student should also show a thorought domain of Portuguese. The knowledge of two foreign languages, one of them being English, in the framework of the reading competence for educational purposes, is also recommended.

Teaching Methods

This course will function in seminars. The students will be encouraged to contribute their own personal reflections to the analysis and questioning of the subjects of this course unit, following the summaries and questions presented by the teaching staff. The contribution of the students presupposes their planned participation in seminars, later to be discussed, with the support of theoretical texts or case studies. Interaction with research projects, mainly conducted at CLP research group “Literary Heritage”, will be encouraged.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to:

a) provide students with a thorough knowledge of Portuguese literature;

b) make them aware of its role as an identity heritage;

c) equip them with the necessary operative concepts and tools to proceed to a well based, articulate and productive integration of literary texts in the social and cultural environment

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

a) critically approach Portuguese literary authors and oeuvres, and discuss their due place in the History of Literature and Culture, both Portuguese and regarding the spaces Portugal historically and culturally has converged with;

b) establishing or questioning their status of heritage texts, by assessing the intertextual and intermedial dialogues brought about by their reception as a long-term process;

c) conceive cultural contents fit to show the civic and broadly enlightening role played by literature, its teaching and its diffusion in present day society.

Syllabus

This course discusses Portuguese literature as a dynamic and constructive cultural issue acting in the social space, in order that students recognize and manage to operationalize its role as an identity heritage, which defines and reconfigures both collective memories and cultural identities.

Contents to be discussed and developed:

1.Literature, cultural heritage, literary heritage:

- the concept of literary heritage;

- research and editing as ways of discussing/enlightening, and preserving/disseminating literary heritage;

- literary heritage and the civic and humanistic values of sustainable social development.

2.Eight centuries of Portuguese Literature:

-an historical and literary phenomenon;

-an ongoing cultural dialog with long-term political and social impacts.

3.Portuguese literary heritage:

- oeuvres and authors – a memory afoot, a corpus in the making;

- sources, production contexts, and coeval issues

- circulation, reception, posterity and new perceptions.
