Learning Outcomes

It will explore two dimensions on urban spaces, landscape and infrastructure. Firstly, urban production during the modern period, taking in consideration the cultural and social context of the South European countries, namely Portugal, Spain and Italy. Secondly, the contemporary urban regeneration of modern cities in this region, according to social and environmental challenges. The students should develop critical thinking to understand key issues:
The political impact of the authoritarian regimes in the urban production
The conflicts between the urban theories and the cultural and social context
The abandonment of city centres and the creation of suburbs
The emerging of new forms of public space
Technical knowledge and Empirical knowledge
Reflect on Urban planning alternative methods
Identify modern urban heritage values
Urban analyses to understand the modern concepts in specific cases
Implement participatory activities to co-design public space
