Teaching Methods

Lectures and method: concepts presentation and discussion; methodological approach; student work, workshops, self-tuition and field work (case studies)

Mid-term crits: presentations of architectural model+design

Concept Final presentation (jury): work deepened the task and question, program, and context analysis show an understanding of the essence of the task and lead to reasoned, appropriate, personal convincing and original design; the design reflects to the qualities and potentials of the existing building, integrating modernistic concepts as plan libreand Raumplan in a contemp. version

Learning Outcomes

The ability to use analysis and design results from RMB 7.1 and to further develop concepts into a design for architectural projects in existing buildings of complicated contexts.

Develop the ability for making concepts for architectural projects in existing buildings, in complicated or highly complicated contexts, using the theoretical knowledge and skills practiced in RMB 5.

The student should prove his or her ability to successfully develop a range of coherent steps from design concept to a definitive design for a factual architectural assignment considering the building’s physical, structural, climatological, and cultural context.

To develop respectful design methods for acts of intervention in modern movement architecture, concentrating on the interior architecture aspects of it

The ability to present the project, both orally and on paper clearly and appropriately as well as a critical reflection of what has been achieved are also important goals of the course.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

n the second part of the RMB 7 studio, students develop architecture design solutions responding to spatial qualities, characteristics of the building, the site/urban setting, the program, and the construction process requirements.

Start Up is an onsite workshop.

The project is the focal point of the second part of the first semester. It centres on a building design in a historical context with the possibilities to work with re- use, building extensions, and the design of new constructions with direct spatial connection to the existing structure.

The design assignment has a strong focus on the building's interior design and housing. The first part of the semester focuses on analytical skills. The second, on using the analysed aspects of modernism from the first part, namely Plan Libre and/or Raumplan, developing concepts for the actual intervention in the building
