Recommended Prerequisites

The student must have academic knowledge in petrology, stratigraphy and structural geology.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical lectures with presentation and discussion about the study areas. Field work it will be developed under the supervision of teacher.

Learning Outcomes

With this course it is intended that students may develop scientific and technical skills in the domain of the field geology analysis. Based on different outcrop analysis methodologies from different geological contexts (stratigraphic and structural), students should be able to produce, in autonomous way, geological reports properly organized and supported from a scientific point of view, and that correctly translates the detailed geology of the various studied locations.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

The course is highly practical consisting in 7 – 10 days of field work on Martian analogie environments in Moroccan desert. During the field work the student will describe aeolian deposits, the sedimentary structures, the internal and external geometries of the sedimentary bodies, the stratigraphic relationships , sedimentary surfaces, subsurface and related processes. Then, the student will identify the possible similarities and differences with sedimentary bodies on Mars.

Another filed work will be carried on in Spain (fluvial deposits) or Greece (Deltaic deposits) during the course of Comparative Sedimentology

Assessment Methods

Assessment
Laboratory work or Field work: 100.0%

Bibliography

As a practical course there are not textbooks. The student will work using a set of papers dealing with the matter of his field work.
