Recommended Prerequisites
Basic notions of Geographical Information Systems
Teaching Methods
This module is taught by introducing and explaining the fundamental and advanced notions in the theoretical courses, and then applying these notions in problem solving practical sessions using a GIS. At the end of the module the students will need to present a project where they apply their acquired knowledge in a new situation.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this teaching unit, the student will:
• Be aware of the usefulness of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the possible applications to earth and environmental sciences
• Understand and master the concepts of geographic and projected coordinate systems, the different data types and associated databases
• Be able to use basic and advanced functions of a GIS (e.g., perform spatial data analysis, automatic data processing, produce a complex map)
• Be able to collect data required to implement a GIS in the domain of earth, planetary, and environmental sciences.
