Strength of Materials, Structural Dynamics, Reinforced Concrete Structures.

Teaching Methods

The traditional blackboard lecture style, with synchronous online transmission, is used for (1) the motivation and detailed exposition of the fundamental ideas, concepts and methods and (2) the application and illustration of the theory, by working through selected examples in detail. The student is then expected to solve, under the supervision of the instructor, a collection of systematically arranged problems; the aim is (1) to suggest to him useful lines of disciplined thought in dealing with more complex problems and (2) to promote his autonomy.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this curricular unit, students will be able to:
A) Understand the definition of seismic actions in NP EN 1998-1.
B) Understand the conceptual design criteria of building structures for earthquake resistance.
C) Analyze building structures under seismic actions, with an in-depth knowledge of the underlying assumptions of the different methods, their limitations and domain of applicability, and critically assess the results.
D) Understand and apply the provisions of NP EN 1998-1 regarding the safety checks and the detailing of structural elements.
E) Have a global view of the present-day status of the upcoming new generation of structural Eurocodes, regarding the design of reinforced concrete buildings for earthquake resistance.
