Recommended Prerequisites

- Construction materials

- Mechanic of materials

- Structural analysis

- Design of structures according to the relevant Eurocodes at ambient temperature.

Teaching Methods

In the teaching of the curricular unit, the presentation of theoretical concepts and advanced knowledge will be done through the availability of all syllabus content in the usual presentation formats to be made available to students. Laboratory visits are expected to be carried out to present some content since the UC has a specialized laboratory on the subject. Presentation of case studies, application examples and worked examples will be used to test the theorethical knowledge acquired. The final grade will be based on a few intermediate assignments during the semester and final exam.

Learning Outcomes

The primary objective of the course is to transfer knowledge about the analysis and safety verification of Timber structures, including CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) in accidental fire situation according to the relevant standardization, namely EN 1995-1-2. Relevant knowledge will be transferred regarding the mechanical and thermal properties of timber at elevated temperature including all thermo-physical phenomena about the combustion of timber. Acquisition of knowledge about the safety checks for compartmentation elements and elements with a load-bearing function, namely columns, beams, panels and connections according to the EN 1995-1-2. In addition to the simplified methods, it is intended to transmit relevant knowledge on the use of advanced tools for the safety verification of timber elements in a fire situation, namely using the finite element method. Performace-based analysis of timber structures.
