Recommended Prerequisites

Mechanics and strength of materials; Structural analysis; Bases for the design of timber structures; Drawing, detailing and BIM in timber construction.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical teaching model combining, in a balanced way, theoretical presentation and solving of practical exercises in a computational environment. Theoretical presentations (using audiovisual media) aim at presenting and explaining the fundamentals for computational modeling and analysis. The practical component, in addition to solving exercises, will include the discussion of practical cases, challenging the critical participation of students so that the objectives of the unit are achieved. The evaluation will be performed through a written test and practical problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of this unit are the acquisition of skills for the development of advanced models in the various aspects necessary for a special project, namely: the acquisition of the bases of numerical modeling through the Finite Element Method (basic knowledge of some common finite elements, to know how to prepare and systematize the information required to produce the model), using commercial programs based on this method; modeling different types of material and geometric behavior, static and/or dynamic, depending on the needs of the project; critical analysis of the results obtained.
