Recommended Prerequisites

EC5 I (designation to be defined), Inspection and Durability in Timber Construction.

Teaching Methods

Presential or online lectures, with pre-availability of the support documentation, solving of design examples and, when needed and feasible, with small practical demos of devices or techniques. The evaluation will be based on tests (60%) and problem solving report (40%).

Learning Outcomes

The need for corrective interventions of patologies or deficiencies in timber constructions occurs both in ancient constructions, either classified or not, and contemporary constructions. The former were built according to ancestral or recognised rules of good timber construction practice, while the latter were executed under the frame of specific codes and standards (namely EC5). Time depletion or the insufficient maestry of the design principles often result in the occurrence of patologies whose solution requires, depending on the specific case, an integrated approach of traditional practices and systems with the design procedures in force, having in mind that replacing or reconstruction systems should take them into account. This unit seeks to cover these diverse repair/rehabilitation situations.
