Teaching Methods

The teaching method consists on the presentation of materials in the form of theoretical-practical classes, always with the concern of presenting and discussing case studies on each theme, framing the reality of the Portuguese wood processing industry in the European panorama. Seminars with industry experts are planned. The evaluation method will mainly focus on the completion of a written exam (70%) and on the delivery of a study visit report (30%).

Present the different solutions in terms of wood products. Basic concepts in the area of production and qualification of wood-based products. Legal and operational framework for product certification. Presentation of tools and methodologies for the prescription of wood products.

1. Unit operations within the wood based industry: primary conversion, drying, secondary conversion;

2. Products based on solid wood: CLT, GLT.

3. Products based on venner: Plywood; LVL; PSL.

4. Products based on strands: OSB; particle panels; fibre panels; LSL & I-Joist; SIPS.

5. Characterization of wood-based products:

- Mechanical properties;

- Physical properties;

- Thermal properties;

- Reaction to fire;

- Acoustical properties;

- Durability.

6. Certification of wood-based products

- Process for obtaining CE marking.

7. Tools and methodologies for the prescription of wood products

8. Seminars with industry specialists.
