Have successfully attended all curricular units of the 1st semester of the course.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methods are those adequate to a doctoral seminar. They are essentially based on collective debate on relevant topics and texts defined at the beginning of the semester. Specifis tasks (e.g. Oral presentations, position papers) will be assigned to each student in the course of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

The unit is designed so as to provide for the acquisition of theoretical and methodological competences in the social sciences and the humanities. On the one hand reflection on key concepts is a major goal; on the other, training in research methodologies relevant for the key thematics of the doctoral programme is intended. In the end, students should have completed approuved their dissertation project.

In addition to the ultimate goal of the construction of the Thesis Project, this seminar aims at providing advanced training in theoretical and methodological perspectives relevant for the research areas covered by the doctoral programme. A particular focus is on a reflection on theories of culture, based on concepts such as language, canon, archive, identity, nation, tradition, heritage, globalization, interculturality, diaspora, hybridity, memory, postcolonialism, among others. At the same time, guidance will be provided on aspects of a practical nature connected to research methodologies in the social sciences and the humanities and to the construction of the dissertation project.
