Digital Signal Processing.

Teaching Methods

The study of the course topics will be conducted by reading of references indicated by the teacher. There will be weekly sessions to answer questions posed by the student related to the subjects read during the prior week. Grading will be based on written exams (50%) and evaluation of essays and presentations (50%) focused on themes related to the course subject.

Learning Outcomes

This course provides the student with information about the fundaments of visual information compression. The mathematical basis for the compression of images and video is studied as well as the information theoretic underpinnings of data compression techniques like entropy-coding (Huffman coding, Arithmetic coding, etc.). The latest image and video coding standards like JPEG, JPEG2000 and the MPEG family of video coders (H.264, HEVC) are studied. Upon conclusion of the course the student should have a well-grounded thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of image and video coding, understanding the limitations and performance of the most common image and video coders as well as their applications.
