Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge acquired during the Degree in Dentistry (pre-Bologna), in the Integrated Master in Dentistry or Integrated Master in Medicine with a specialty in Stomatology.

Teaching Methods

- Teaching is divided into theoretical classes, demonstrations and practical applications on the topics taught.

- Theoretical classes will be taught supported by software, based on PBL (Problem Based Learning).

- Theoretical-practical classes are held with the active participation of students.

- Some classes will be taught by invited professors from outside the FMUC, in order to provide a more diversified level of knowledge.

- The discussion of topics presented and based on real clinical situations, allows the acquisition and consolidation of contents and knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

O1. Perform diagnose and treatment plan of teeth with pulpal and periapical pathology, using convencional radiology, CBCT and/or virtual reality.

O2. Perform endodontic treatments with different mechanized instrumentation systems, electronic apex locators and photodynamic therapy.

O3. Perform endodontic treatments using previously planned and prepared canal access guides (with CAD/CAM).

O4. Perform surgical and non-surgical endodontic retreatments using a microscope and using surgical guides (planned and made with CAD/CAM).

O5. Interpret a decision flowchart in the management of dental trauma.

O6. Simulate the regeneration of teeth with an open apex, using tissue engineering.

O7. Through a virtual simulator, perform access cavity and canal approach as well as planning dental transplants after dental trauma with hapics exercises.

Syllabus

• Guided endodontics: preparation of guides for canal access (calcified canals or tooth with complex anatomies) as well as surgical guides for periapical surgery (face-to-face content);
• Laser and photodynamic therapy as an aid in canal system disinfection (face-to-face content);
• New devices in the canal approach: instrumentation with digital technologies (on-line content);
• Tissue engineering applied to regenerative endodontics (face-to-face content);
• Computer programs and software in clinical practice and patient follow-up (on-line content);
• Adaptation of clinical information to a digital flow - patient's file, X-Rays, root canal difficulty degree, system of files used, rotation speed and torque (on-line content);
• Predictive computational models for the diagnosis and development of apical pathology(on-line content);
• Patient stratification and artificial intelligence, namely translating follow-ups into numerical data (face-to-face content).
