Recommended Prerequisites

The knowledge acquired in other curricular units and which are crucial for the proper use and progression in this unit, namely: Head and Neck Human Anatomy; Dental Anatomy; Physiology of the Stomatognathic System; General and Dental Histology and Embryology; Orthodontics (Preventive, interceptive and corrective orthodontics; Definition/classification of malocclusion; Orthodontic diagnosis; Orthodontic examination; Analysis of dental occlusion; Analysis of oromaxillofacial muscles; Cephalometric analysis; Etiology of malocclusion; Orthodontic treatment plan; Fixed appliances, removable and functional).

Additionally, the student must be endowed with language skills (English) as well as technical skills to use the latest diagnostic/treatment planning software.

Teaching Methods

T:
Topics will be addressed based on the most current scientific evidence, using expository and interrogative presentations, in order to stimulate student dialogue. The exposure of the topics covered, through audiovisual equipment, will also be complemented with clinical cases.

P:
• Practical demonstration, simulation in haptic devices and practical exercises in the analysis of study models, photographs and imaging exams using new technologies.
• Discussion of clinical cases and respective orthodontic treatment plans, combined or not with orthognathic surgery.

Learning Outcomes

Provide the theoretical and practical bases indispensable for orthodontic treatment, which can be combined with orthognathic surgery, making students able to identify, diagnose and treat orthodontic and/or surgical problems using new technologies.

1. Acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge for the performance of a clinical practice based on the most recent scientific evidence;

2. Application of theoretical knowledge to practical exercises with teaching supervision and autonomously;

3. Know how to use technological tools indispensable for the elaboration of diagnoses and orthodontic treatment plans, combined or not with orthognathic surgery;

4. Discuss and change treatment plans in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.

5. Know how to use technological tools essential to the design and manufacture of orthodontic devices and orthognathic surgery.
