Recommended Prerequisites

Chemistry and Physics.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes will cover the concepts of materials, properties, processing and recycling methods and stimulate discussion about their importance for the future Master in Environmental Engineering. Theoretical-practical classes reinforce these concepts with particular emphasis on the post-recycling properties function of the final application. In all classes, proactive postures will be encouraged by the students, necessary to acquire the skills assigned to the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Acquisition of knowledge to select, control and adapt recycling methodologies to the production of new components or even systems with the required quality, from the point of view of application and cost rationalization. Knowledge about the different types of materials in order to select the appropriate recycling methodologies so basic knowledge about the major classes of materials is a necessary condition. Close relationship with the circular economy, specifically in recycling methods that allow material after use to be considered as a raw material.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Material knowledge for true environmental engineering. Material classes. Fundamentals of materials science and engineering: chemistry bonding versus properties (intrinsic properties); Crystalline and amorphous materials versus structural properties (extrinsic properties). Nanomaterials. Material properties and service performance of components / devices / systems. Processing methods of the different material classes. Recycling methods of different classes of materials.
