Recommended Prerequisites

Digital Communication Systems.

Optical Communication Systems.

Teaching Methods

The course encompasses both seminar and tutorial classes. Seminars will be used for presentation and discussion of the emergent topics, while providing the ssencial theoretical background. Whenever possible top field experts will be invited to present their breakthrough research.

Within the framework of the topics discussed in the seminar lectures, each student should identify a subject of his/her interest whose knowledge he/she intends to study, and write the project proposal that will be carried out within the course. The tutorial classes will support the student individual project.

Learning Outcomes

In this course the students will acquire skills on emergent research topics of these different types of communication systems in an unified framework. In this course the students will learn advanced topics of wireless radio frequency (RF) communications systems, optical wireless communications, and fiber-optic communications, along with a strong contextualization of the state-of-the-art and emergent technologies within these fields.

Usually, these different types of communication systems are considered at separate disciplines. However, the key concepts, such as propagation principles, modulation formats, channel coding, diversity principles, MIMO signal processing, equalization, adaptive modulation and coding, detection principles, and software-defined transmission are common. There is also an ongoing convergence on the interoperability and complementarity of these systems.
