Teaching Methods

In teaching the course, it is expected the presentation of theoretical concepts and generic knowledge related to the themes defined in the course syllabus, study of practical cases and resolution of application exercises. During the course, students will have the opportunity to get in touch with practical examples of the application of the transmitted concepts. The assessment includes the theoretical content and the theoretical-practical component. The evaluation is carried out through a theoretical-practical exam (20 values).

Learning Outcomes

With this course, it is intended that the student acquires knowledge about water supply systems, wastewater drainage, rainwater drainage and urban solid waste. The student should understand its main components, how they interconnect and interact. The student should obtain skills that allow him to dialogue with technicians (engineers) in the area, being able to understand the functioning of different solutions and have a critical spirit about the proposals that are presented.

Introduction to Water and Waste Systems

Notions of hydraulics: properties of liquids, units and quantities, fundamental concepts of hydrodynamics, pressure flows and free surface flows

Notions of urban hydrology: watershed, return period, precipitation, IDF curves, precipitation-runoff transformation.

Water Supply Systems: types, functions and components

Wastewater drainage systems: types, functions and components

Rainwater Drainage Systems: types, functions and components

Urban waste management: collection, sorting, organic recovery, energy recovery, landfill.
