Recommended Prerequisites

To enroll in this course unit, students must have completed all subjects from the first cycle of their original programme. It is recommended that students complete at least 75% of the first-year course units of the second cycle.

Teaching Methods

At the beginning of the semester, the available project topics (each associated with one or two supervisors) are assigned to students according to predefined criteria. The student is expected to develop the proposed topic independently, with a schedule of regular meetings established between the student and their supervisor to monitor progress and address any challenges that may arise. In order to ensure compliance with submission deadlines, students are required to make an interim presentation of their work to members of the Master’s dissertation monitoring committee.

Learning Outcomes

The Master’s dissertation in Mechanical Engineering aims to carry out an individual project of a scientific and/or technological nature on a topic within the field of the degree programme. This project is intended to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes acquired throughout the course. The dissertation may consist of research work conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM), or of the application of tools acquired during the first cycle and throughout the second cycle in an industrial setting. The outcome of the work developed during the dissertation must result in a written document, which must be defended before a Jury composed of at least three members, of whom at least two must be PhD professors/researchers from FCTUC, specialising in the subject area of the dissertation,

Syllabus

The dissertation is carried out on a full-time basis at a selected institution (either a DEM laboratory or a partner company), following an individually defined work plan established by the supervisor(s). In general, the work to be developed will involve: Detailed definition of the problem to be analysed and the research question; Literature review; Development and application of analytical, experimental, or numerical methodologies; Collection and analysis of results in response to the research question; Preparation of the written dissertation; Final public presentation before a jury.
