Recommended Prerequisites

To attend this course, the student must have completed all the subjects from a first study cycle. It is recommended that the student has done at least 75% of subjects in the 1st year of the 2nd year to ensure the necessary expertise to carry out the proposed research work

Teaching Methods

At the beginning of the semester the research topics available (which one has associated one/two supervisors) are assigned to students according to predefined criteria. It is intended that the student develops the theme autonomously. A set of periodic meetings between the student and the supervisor is conducted during the semester to check the progress of the work and overcome difficulties. In order to ensure compliance with the deadlines students must make an intermediate presentation of their work to the elements of the monitoring committee of master dissertations.

Learning Outcomes

The dissertation in Mechanical Engineering aims at the realization of an individual scientific and / or technological research work of on a subject of the knowledge area of the course. This work aims at the integration and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during the course. This dissertation may be a research work carried out in the laboratories of DEM or the application in the industrial context of the tools acquired in the 1st cycle and in the curricular units meanwhile acquired during the frequency of the 2nd cycle. The result of the work developed throughout the dissertation should lead to a written document, which must be defended before a Jury composed of at least three elements, in which at least 2 must be FCTUC professors / PhD researchers belonging to ( s ) area ( s ) of specialty theme.

Syllabus

The dissertation is a full time work in a selected institution (DEM laboratory or partner company facilities), according to a work plan previously defined by the supervisor(s). Generally the work will involve developing: Detailed definition of the problem to be analyzed; Literature review, development and application of analysis methodologies, experimental or numerical; Collection and quantification of results, preparation of the synthesis report; Final public presentation before a jury.
