Recommended Prerequisites

The course provides an introduction to spatial planning. Therefore, there are no specialized technical prerequisites.

Teaching Methods

Classes combine oral presentation with practical exercises. The contents are lectured in a practical way, linking to real challenges. Also, methods include project-base learning (group work).

Learning Outcomes

The course has the following main objectives: to familiarize students with key challenges, policies and methodologies of territorial planning for sustainable development, taking into account the socio-demographic, urban, transport and natural systems.

Specifically, students should become knowledgeable about variables and key indicators for diagnostic analysis, the process of strategy formulation, and techniques for generating and evaluating alternative lines of action.

2. Socio-economic system

- Demographic analysis. Methods of demographic projections

- Economic base analysis.

3. Urban system

- Functional and administrative hierarchy

- Land use, urban analysis and urban planning

- Facility planning: optimization models

4. Transport system

- Concepts and metrics of accessibility

- Transport planning: 4-step model

- Transport network design. Application of optimization techniques

5. Natural system

- Natural system and critical vulnerabilities of the territory

6. Spatial planning and management

- Sustainable development policies. Strategic objectives and policy measures

- Decision support techniques: multi-criteria and cost-benefit analysis

- Legal and regulatory framework in Portugal.
