Recommended Prerequisites

Student must have knowledge on Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well on the principles of Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics and Toxicology.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical, and in real context resolution of clinical cases.

Learning Outcomes

The students should know methods for hazard evaluation, for example, DNA adducts, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and risk assessment for other potential toxic effects, even if in certain cases for herbal traditional medicines, with well-stablished use, they will be not necessary. These warnings will help to avoid accidents due to a poor evaluation of the potential risks.

In addition, they wil be able to evaluate the potential pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic drug-herb interactions  (drugs, herbal medicines, foods, and dietetic supplements) which induce events of therapeutic failure, toxicity events, and, also, side effects and toxicity from adulterants and/or contaminants). The main focus will be chronic and oncologic diseases). At the end of this learning, the students will be able to discuss the borderline outcomes from the confirmative results and provide the necessary tools for a better and more rational risk assessment assuring the safety of herbal-based medicine.
