Recommended Prerequisites

Structure and properties of materials: basic knowledge on the interrelationship between chemical bonding, atomic structure and the properties of matter.

Materials science: broad knowledge about the nature of different types of Materials, including the quantitative knowledge about the values of the properties of materials, for both metallic and non-metallic materials.

Mechanical Technology: knowledge of forming, machining, casting, welding, sintering and surface modification technologies.

Mechanical Design: good knowledge in Mechanical Engineering design for the most diverse loadings: static, dynamic, creep and impact.

Knowledge of thermodynamics and fluids.

Teaching Methods

In a first part of the course the procedure to perform the materials selection is presented. A similar procedure is adopted for the selection of the manufacturing processes. In this phase, the theoretical classes are complemented with theoretical-practical, where specific examples of each step of the selection procedure are taught to the students. The students solve practical problems which are briefly solved in the text book. In a second phase, a case-study is distributed to the students. Its development will end with a final report and an oral defence in front of an evaluation committee.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the Selection of Materials and Manufacturing Processes curricular unit can be summarized by the learning of a methodology to proceed, in a systematic way, to a progressive reduction of the endless number of materials and manufacturing processes available in the market. By consecutive steps, groups with sizes successively smaller are achieved until reaching a final detailed analysis which will allow an optimized selection of the best option. The competences supplied to the students should also reinforce the knowledge previously acquired regarding materials science and manufacturing processes, particularly concerning its application in the industrial environment and its application in useful life, in order to understand the close relationship existing between the material and the technology used for processing the final product.
