Recommended Prerequisites
Structure and Properties of Matterials; Materials Science and Engineering; Technologies.
Teaching Methods
The teaching methods used have as main objective the essential knowledge about advanced technologies applied to materials engineering. Besides regular classes on key topics, which will be taught the basics and stimulated discussion about its importance for future materials masters, the relationship is established between the product and the technology. Classes will be supplemented by visits to industries where the technology is available.
Learning Outcomes
To select, monitor and adapt technologies associated to the production of parts with rationalization of costs. Acquisition of skills in surface modification technologies. Powder technology is increasingly a requirement for the manufacturing of parts of complex geometry in large series. The acquisition of skills in powder technology is a need for macro mechanical parts/systems, but essential for the manufacture of micro that can use conventional techniques modified or even new approaches such as the use of laser, ion beam, electron beam or even bacteria. Bonding techniques are not suitable to join microparts or even some features or macroparts in which the alloys used are incompatible, making use of the laser and the beams of electrons and use of fillers with nanolayers self-propagating required for an effective response. The final finishing, with or without the texturing of surfaces, is assumed to be a nanofinishing, forcing the use of magnetic abrasives or electron beam machining.

Advanced technologies as a driver of metatechnology associated to a product. Technological vector of the matrix product. The advanced technologies available on the market with interest to mechanical engineering – 2D to 3D technologies. Surface modification technologies-treatments by diffusion and implantation; treatments for deposition of a coating: coatings thin and thick. 3D technologies-technologies for processing powders: metal alloys, ceramic materials and composites; the characteristics of powders and processing; processing types: shaping (pressing and injection) and consolidation/sintering (temperature and pressure); role of laser. 3D technologies "near net shape": role of powders and specific treatments; the control parameters. Micromanufacturing - definition; subtractive processes; replicatives (micro PIM and hot embossing) and additives processes; other processes. Comparative analysis of costs.
