Recommended Prerequisites

Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Complements of Thermodynamics and Fluids.

Teaching Methods

In the theoretical classes the subjects of the program are presented in more or less detail, motivating the students to study them more in depth in their personal study.

The theoretical-practical classes are used to analyze and solve small engineering problems involving TM.

Each student must perform two team works, one experimental, and the other of design of a TM in order to complement and strengthen his knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

The objective of this discipline is to complement the knowledge in the areas of applied thermodynamics, mechanics and fluid mechanics on the analysis of flow in a turbomachine and the fundamentals of operation of the main types of turbomachines.

The students should acquire a good understanding and mastering of the criteria to select and determine the size and operation conditions of turbomachines used both in fixed and mobile installations.

It is also planned to provide a contact with the experimental determination of the characteristic curves of a set of turbomachines and with the process of designing of the main parts of radial and tangential turbomachines.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

1. Introduction to the turbomachines (TM).

2. Parametrical analysis of TM and cavitation in hydraulic TM.

3. Solution of generalized (with TM) hydraulic (incompreesible) networks. Introduction to the incompressible TM.

4. General introduction to the hydraulic/aerodynamic design of TM - The flow through the rotor.

5. Design of radial TM: 5a Slow (blades with simple curvature): full design, including the director system (spiral volute); 5b Mean velocity (blades with double curvature): complementary design.

6. Design of Pelton turbines (tangential TM).
