Learning Outcomes

Students learn to understand how the contemporary surveillance society is structured. They will understand the changing nature of insecurity and (sometimes exaggerated) surveillance as a response to it. They will know that security and surveillance should be approached in a critical manner: there are local and global differences in access to surveillance devices and in possibilities to express oneself freely without being under control.

Syllabus

The course will deal with the increased insecurity in contemporary societies. The main themes include: The geography of fear, Local urban security politics, Global securitization, The changing nature of surveillance, Contemporary surveillance technologies, The militarization of urban space, Resistance and right to hide.
