Teaching Methods

Lectures, group meetings, individual work and group work. The course is organized jointly by the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Turku, and Environmental and Marine Biology, Åbo Akademi University.

Learning Outcomes

The student knows the principles of regional planning in marine and coastal areas, and understands the complex processes that take place when the plans are made. The student is able to evaluate the planning processes and their outcomes, and compare different implementations nationally and internationally. The student can participate in planning negotiations and stakeholder meetings, and contribute to the process.

Syllabus

The course offers theoretical and methodological background relevant to marine and coastal planning from scientific and practical perspectives. The students will carry out group work tasks, which are connected to actual development of spatial planning in the Baltic Sea region. Emphasis is put on understanding the complex interaction between anthropogenic pressures and environmental vulnerability, as well as evaluating and comparing finished planning processes and plans.
