Learning Outcomes

The following main objectives were defined:

• To explain and identify energy sources and their use, impacts on human and environment of electricity production;

•To acquire knowledge of the various available renewable energy sources, to characterize them and the correspondent technologies for capturing and producing energy from renewable sources;

• To get familiarized with Solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, hydro plants, the use of biomass, the production of biofuel, harnessing wave and tidal energy and geothermal energy - including their energy storage systems and their applications.

Syllabus

The courses/tutorial classes are divided into different parts in which the following aspects are addressed:

- What is energy and different forms of energy,

- Electric power generation systems,

- Renewable energies and energy transition,

- Energy conversion systems,

- Solar resource and dimensioning of a photovoltaic installations,

- Dimensioning of a wind turbines,

- Storage of electrical energy and fuel cell.
