I) Theoretical lectures
Use a audiovisuals means to explain the main theories and principals of the subjects. In addition, some problems are solved.
II) Practical-theoretical lectures
Resolution of problems. Use of Plaxis and Slide codes to solve geotechnical problems
III) Practical lectures
Laboratory lectures, demonstration of testing equipments and visit to works.
To provide advanced formation in terms of conception, design, construction and observation of geotechnical works, namely when the execution of embankments has an important role (p.e, embankments for roads, earth dams, etc).
1. Revisions of shear strength and compressibility of clays
2. Embankments built on soft soils
Design. Evaluation of settlements and horizontal displacements. Typical behaviour of embankments built on soft soils. Construction techniques: lateral berms, vertical drains, staged construction, preloading, sand columns, concrete piles, deep mixing columns, use of geossynthetics, use light materials. Field observation of geotechnical works (equipment, reliability, use, etc)
3. Embankments – general
Reference laboratory tests. Check of execution. Control tests. Use of binders to stabilise the embankments. Equipments. Classification LCPC/SETRA. Advances in execution and control of embankments construction.
4. Gravel and earth dams
Portuguese experience review. Types of dams. Subjects which control the dam choice. Design of drainage devices. Study of water flow. Stability analysis. Observation of the behaviour. Instrumentation. Legislation. Practical cases.
