Syllabus

I. Biosensor BASIC CONCEPT - Components and requirements. Inspiration from nature. Selectivity, sensitivity, stability and response time. Detection by biocatalytic or binding event. Enzymatic biosensors and immunosensors.

II. APPLICATIONS of biosensors in health, in process control, in the military area, and in the environment.

III. RECOGNITION ELEMENTS - Kind and immobilization. Concept, methods and (dis)advantages. Dependence from the receptor surface.

4. RECEPTOR SURFACES - Characterization and modification. Coating with sensory membranes.

V. IDENTIFICATION OF NANOMATERIALS in biosensors - Main nanomaterials. Molecular imprint polymers. Carbon materials (derived from graphite). Inclusion in composites.

VI. PREPARATION METHODS OF NANOMATERIALS - Radical polymerization. Graphene production by exfoliation and its modification.

Laboratory work in i) modification and ii) chemistry of materials and surfaces, applied to biosensors.
