Teaching methods: theoretical for theoretical explanations; Theoretical and practical for conceptual and real-case discussions. Tutorial orientation for the development of case studies.

Learning Outcomes

To provide the main principles, concepts, methodologies and tools for the integrated water resources management, the understanding of the various issues involved (social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political) in water resources management.

Acquiring capabilities in using scientific methods in integrated water resources management.

Planning methodologies. National water resources legislation. Watershed master plans. Comparative analysis of European institutional systems for water management -The Portuguese approach. Water systems components.. Water budgets. Ecological issues. Decision making in water systems: technical, economical, social, legal environmental and political aspects. Governance. Public participation. Decision models: objective function, constraints and variables.  Multi-objective decision analysis. Cost- benefit analysis. Extreme events. Risk and uncertainty. Redundant, resilient and robust systems. Reservoir-Dams operation. Integrated management of surface water and groundwater systems. Water quality management: point sources and non-point sources.
