Recommended Prerequisites

Level B1.1 of the CEFR or aproval at French Language I - II - III and IV.

Teaching Methods

Students should present orally a contrastive analysis of 2 articles from newspapers (1 Portuguese and 1 French) dealing with the same theme (economics, social, political, conflicts, etc.) of national or international relevance.

To improve students’ oral skills, comprehension exercises will be given using excerpts from conferences, debates, interviews, and television and radio news programs. The reading and lexical and grammatical analysis of texts in the area of International Relations will enable a lexical and morphosyntactic study of the language.

Learning Outcomes

Students should reach level B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The program contents, which are always in the area of International Relations, aims to provide the student with the skills to understand a vast number of long and demanding texts, recognizing their implicit meanings, expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously without having to look for words, use language in a flexible and effective for social, academic and professional purposes, expressing itself on complex issues in a clear and well-structured manner, manifesting the domain of mechanisms of organization, articulation and cohesion of discourse.

Syllabus

To communicate and understand the gist of both simple and complex texts about concrete or abstract themes, including technical discussions in the areas of specialization. To provide the necessary tools to enable communication with native speakers with a degree of spontaneity and ease, with students being able to express themselves clearly and in detail, on a wide range of topics and give and justify opinions on current affairs.

Training in the comprehension of authentic audio and audio-visual documents in standard or familiar French: comprehension, oral or written report

• Topolectal variation of spoken French

• Production of descriptive, narrative and argumentative texts

• Phraseology: idiomatic expressions, collocations, phrases

• Grammar: Logical and chronological connectors, use of modes and times, relative / double / possessive / interrogative pronouns.
