Teaching Methods
The curricular unit will operate on a theoretical-practical basis: presentation of content, clarification of doubts and orientation of tasks by the teacher; preparation, presentation and discussion of tasks by students.
Learning Outcomes
By concluding this course, students should be able to draw a comprehensive picture of European History from the late eighteenth century to the present; to identify both introductory bibliography and works focusing on specific aspects of modern history (allowing them to develop narratives on key processes of European modernity, such as the development of industrial capitalism, the public sphere, nationalism, the Nation-State, colonialism); to problematize the chronology of modernity (through concepts such as “the long nineteenth-century” or the “short twentieth-century”), as well as the geographical diversity of the European continent, including disctinctions between North and South, Western and Eastern Europe, centre and periphery, or metropole and colony. Students will therefore develop skills from a broad range of disciplines and mobilize their acquired knowledge in the study of the past to the understanding of our own present.
