Introduction to the Study of German Literatures.

Teaching Methods

The course will function mostly through practice of literary analysis, as a starting point for theoretical reflection about periodology and critical methodologies. This implies using both literary texts and critical articles that discuss them, which can be an important introduction to the form of the scientific essay as well. If necessary, Portuguese translations will be used.

Learning Outcomes

The student should acquire a basic knowledge of classic and modern works of German Literatures, as well as of the respective critical analysis and how these evolved across time, from the most "classic" to contemporary ones. The word play with "classic" and "modern" in the course's title is intended to allow the teacher to formulate different syllabus within this framework, that may either privilige a focus on the canonic literary works from Klassik to Romanticism or Modernism, connected through thematic approaches, or a focus on the comparative analysis of the critical frameworks that determined the changing of the canon through time, thus encompassing a double look upon literary writing and theory.

Syllabus

As explained above, this course proposes a double look that will focus on major literary works of the canon of German literature from Klassik/ Romantik to Modernism and/ or the major paradigms of literary theory / criticism that have focussed on these works and their evolution. The literary and the theoretical syllabus will be chosen according to similar or contrasting thematics that may allow for a comparative comprehension of literature, theory, the culture and the politics behind each production and reception context.
