German Language Literatures and Comparative Studies
1st Cycle Studies
Introduction to the study of German Languages.
The introduction to the methods and operative concepts of Comparative Studies will happen mostly through practice, that is, through analysis and discussion of texts from different national and cultural contexts, having German literatures as the main focus. If necessary, Portuguese translations will be used.
At the end of the course students should: have a basic knowledge on the notion, methods and instruments of the different disciplinary fields of Comparative Studies having literatures in German as a starting point; have developed his/her ability to analyze and comment literary texts in a comparative perspective; understand and evaluate the potential of inter-cultural, interdisciplinary and inter-arts studies.
Comparative Studies is a paradigm of cultural and literary analysis that crosses borders and explores limits. Based on literatures written in German, this course wishes to discover the various perspectives adopted by comparative literary studies in promoting a dialogue between cultures, between knowledge fields and between different arts. We will talk about imagology, reception, translation, gender studies, cultural studies, and post-colonial studies. We will work on the literary text and on this and its crossings with film, painting and photography, children literature and comics; we will work on the North, the South, the West, the East in a first approach to Literature as World Literature.
