Recommended Prerequisites

Good language competences in Portuguese and reading competences in English and/or French and/or German and/or Italian and/or Spanish.

Teaching Methods

1) Presentation by the teachers, with special emphasis on questions of theory and methodology, aiming at the commented analysis of texts, both academic and translations.

2) Analysis of texts by doctoral students, individually or in groups, in order to familiarize themselves with the various approaches and the resulting work methodologies.

3) Elaboration of written works and individual oral communications.

4) All the methods mentioned imply the active involvement of doctoral students in the discussion/comment of the contents covered.

Learning Outcomes

The possible great diversity of training, language skills and interests of doctoral students imposes the involvement of teachers from various areas in the teaching of the seminar.

At the end of the seminar, the doctoral student:

1) Will be familiar with several theoretical and methodological approaches in the field of Translation Studies.

2) Will be familiar with a high number of translation practices: specialized translation in different fields of knowledge, both in the field of Sciences and Humanities; literary translation; translation of children's literature; audiovisual translation, knowing how to identify and specific translation processes and procedures in these areas.

3) Will know how to conceptualize the questions posed by different translation practices.

4) Develop and apply critical methodologies appropriate to the object of study.

5) Student will be equipped for a reflection on contemporary policies and ethics of Translation as an instrument of intercultural dialogue.

Syllabus

In this seminar, the following contents will be treated, in their interrelation:

1) Reading and commenting on critical bibliography in the field of Translation Studies: functionalist, descriptive, hermeneutic and cultural approaches.

2) Analysis of texts from different areas of knowledge, in different languages.

3) Analysis and critical reading of texts translated in conjunction with the knowledge and methodologies acquired and discussed in 1) and 2).

4) Development of a critical translation methodology.

5) Elaboration of academic papers and oral communications.
