Teaching Methods

1) Theoretical presentation; critical text commentary; exploitation of databases and other research tools with doctoral student’s participation.

2) Presentation of research and project results by the student.

3) Debate of ideas and exchange of experiences.

Learning Outcomes

The general objective is to take doctoral student to deepen the knowledge about the way in which, throughout the centuries, Italian literature has been conceptualized and studied; and develop the domain of research instruments, at an advanced level, for the study of Italian literature and culture.

At the end of the seminar, student should be able to identify and problematize the critical framework that involves his/her research; dimensioning the appropriate methodologies related to them; and to use the appropriate research tools.

Syllabus

1) Critical history of the discipline «Italian literature». Language and literature. From the primacy of literature to «literary communication». Depth, speed and dynamics of transformations.

2) Primacy of contemporary Italian criticism: textual criticism and variantistic, metric studies, idealistic criticism, Gramscian criticism, structuralism and semiotics, «geografia e storia» of literature, cultural studies and migration, marginalization and resistance. Representative personalities and works. Reception in Portugal.

3) Instruments. Main centers of critical elaboration: universities, academies, cultural associations and other institutions. State and institutional pivotal bibliographic projects. Archives, libraries. Network organization and databases.
