Recommended Prerequisites
The student must be able to understand complex texts in Spanish.
Teaching Methods
The course will take place in a seminar-mode, in which both the teacher and the doctoral students are expected to lecture. Readings from a selected corpus of texts will be thorough and lengthy. Students are expected to produce papers, of which the typology and number is to be decided at the beginning of the course.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, doctoral students are expected to
1) Understand the main contextual factors surrounding Spanish and Spanish-American literatures in a given period.
2) Be able to relate literature to the other forms of artistic expression present in Spanish and Hispanic-American societies in the same period and to literary works of other countries representative of the same artistic currents.
3) To know the most relevant literary and artistic personalities of the time and cultural space considered.

The course will be monograph-like, focusing primarily on one author or central topic within the referred literary scope. The following learning path will be pursued:
1) Description of the historical, literary and cultural background.
2) Presentation of the author or topic by means of corpus selection.
3) In-depth study of the central texts of the chosen author or topic.
