Learning Outcomes
To provide students with knowledge of fundamental principles and methodologies of environmental engineering, in wastewater treatment, to be considered in the context of future Environmental Engineers.

1. Quantification, composition and characterization of wastewater: Quantities of wastewater; Components of wastewater; Characterisation of wastewater and biomass.
2. Fundamentals of biological treatment of wastewater: Introduction; Conversions on biological reactors; Conversion heterotrophic aerobic of organic matter; Nitrification; Denitrification; Biological removal of phosphorus; Anaerobes Processes.
3. Activated sludge systems: Balance mass; Concepts and definitions related to the activated sludge systems; Types of activated sludge systems; Mathematical models of activated sludge systems.
4. Biofilm reactors: Kinetics of biofilms; Kinetic parameters of biofilms; Diffusion in the liquid film; Diffusion of electron donor and receptor; Kinetics of biofilters; Mass balances applied to biofilm reactors; Concepts and definitions; Types of treatment systems; Project of biofilm reactors for removal dissolved organic matter.
